America’s Farmers Grow Communities donation supports local organization

MEMPHIS, Mo. April 1, 2015 – Scotland County Hospital's Oncology & Infusion Center has received a $2,500 donation from Schuyler County farmer Evan Johnson and America’s Farmers Grow Communities, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund. The donation will help the organization provide additional comforts and resources to the patients and families that receive their cancer treatments at Scotland County Hospital's Oncology & Infusion Center in Memphis.

The organization will purchase educational books that will be beneficial to both cancer patients and their caregivers, along with paying for small celebrations for chemotherapy patients who hit significant milestones, like halfway through chemotherapy treatment or their last day of treatment.
“The best part of receiving this donation is having the funding to provide a few extra comforts to our oncology patients and their families,” said Valerie Bair, RN, Director of Nursing at Scotland County Hospital. “We are most proud of the fact that patients suffering from cancer or cancer related illnesses can have their treatments close to home.” Bair went on to explain the importance of the farm community. “Cancer touches the lives of nearly every family. We know we would not have a patient base without the farm families that live in this area and utilize our services, which are close to home.”

Farmers often have to leave town to purchase goods & services for their farming operations. Scotland County Hospital makes healthcare access a little easier by offering many services right in Memphis, easing travel for all involved. “Scotland County Hospital, as a district hospital, believes that comprehensive primary health care can effectively be delivered on a local basis, easing stress on the patients and families by placing them in familiar surroundings and with people they know,” said Bair.

America’s Farmers Grow Communities is part of the America’s Farmers initiative. Since 2010, the America’s Farmers campaign and programs have advocated on behalf of farmers and their efforts to meet society’s needs through agriculture. Today, consumers are more interested than ever in agriculture and how food is grown. Consider joining the conversation and helping to raise awareness about agriculture.
