New Therapy For Parkinson's Patients at Scotland County Hospital Therapy Services Department

6/24/2020

The Therapy Services Department at Scotland County Hospital in Memphis, MO, is pleased to announce a new therapy program for patients with Parkinson's Disease. Carrie Hamner, Physical Therapist, is now now certified with the LSVT Big® program. This program targets patients with Parkinson's Disease. LSVT Big® is a research-based exercise approach for people with Parkinson's Disease (PD) and other progressive neurological disorders that impair limb function, gait, balance, and activities of daily living. Even with optimal medical management (medications/surgery) these deficits cannot be controlled satisfactorily in the vast majority of individuals with PD and have a negative impact on the quality of life. The LSVT Big® treatment protocol was developed specifically to address unique movement impairment of individuals with Parkinson's Disease (PD) and other progressive neurological disorders.

LSVT Big® differs from other forms of physical therapy in PD through its training of movement amplitude as a single treatment focus through high effort and intensive treatment focusing on re-educating normal movements. This results in normal amplitude during gait, movement, and activities of daily living. LSVT Big® is a restorative approach aiming to restore normal movement by recalibrating a patient's mobility and movement through task-driven exercise.

The reasons the LSVT Big® therapy works is because the program movements train a single target of amplitude (bigger movements), drives intensive and high-effort practice, teaches a patient the amount of effort required to produce normal movements, translates bigger movements into everyday  activities, and empowers patients to strive for continued improvements.

Research on LSVT Big® has documented improved motor functioning including:

  • Ease of movement
  • Turn and walk at a more normal speed and step length (Better speed with bigger steps)
  • Improved balance
  • Increased trunk rotation
  • Improved performance with tasks of daily living
  • Improvement in quality of life

LSVT Big® has been shown to be effective in early diagnosis to slow the progression of movement difficulties and during mid to late stages to improve function.

LSVT Big® treatment consists of:

  1. 16 sessions: 4 consecutive days-a-week for 4 weeks
  2. One on One - 1 hour sessions
  3. Intensive and complex treatment to optimize learning and carry over to improve movement and function in everyday life tasks
  4. Daily homework practice
  5. Daily carry over exercises

If you or someone you know would benefit from the LSVT Big® treatment program offered by the Therapy Services Department at Scotland County Hospital in Memphis, MO, please call your primary care provider for a referral to the program.
