Mammography Discounted During Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The color pink is nearly everywhere you look. The color symbolizes efforts to successfully detect and treat breast cancer, while showing support for the people who are affected by it. Staff at the Hospital and Rural Health Clinics are wearing pink t-shirts on Fridays in October to symbolize their observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Mammograms are the most effective tool used to diagnose breast cancer. Even if you have no family history of breast cancer, you still need an annual screening. Mammograms are the gold standard for early detection of breast cancer and it’s essential to have one every year, so physicians can observe the breast tissue over time. The sooner breast cancer is detected, the sooner treatment can begin!

There are different symptoms of breast cancer, and some people have no symptoms at all.

Symptoms can include—

  • Any change in the size or the shape of the breast.
  • Pain in any area of the breast.
  • Nipple discharge other than breast milk (including blood).
  • A new lump in the breast or underarm.
  • If you have any signs that worry you, see your doctor right away.

During the month of October, Scotland County Hospital has partnered with Hannibal Imaging Services and bundled a discounted mammogram package. For $100 the self-pay/cash-pay patient will get a mammogram and the reading fee. The patient will pay two bills: one to Scotland County Hospital for the mammogram and one to the Hannibal Imaging Services for the reading fee. Additionally, women that come in and get their mammogram in the month of October will have their name placed in a drawing for a quilt, fleece blanket and t-shirt. The drawing for these gifts will be held live on the Hospital's Facebook page on the afternoon of October 31st. Winners will be contacted after the Facebook live event. Follow us at
